The short answer

Some lenders approve fair and poor credit by weighing income and bank history, but lower scores mean higher APRs. Compare total cost before choosing any high-cost lender.

How lenders look at bad credit

A low score does not automatically rule you out. Some lenders weigh steady income, how long you have had your bank account and how you have handled recent payments. Others use alternative credit bureaus that track short-term loans and rent. What changes most with a lower score is price: the less certain a lender is about repayment, the higher the APR it charges.

Bad credit and Deer Creek Lending

Many people find Deer Creek Lending because it approves borrowers with fair or poor credit. Reviewers often say it was easy to get approved, and many then report APRs in the 500% to 700% range (Trustpilot). If your score is low, it is worth seeing whether any lower-cost lender will offer you something first. A request through us is one way to check.

Ways to improve your odds

  • Request only what you need. Smaller amounts are easier to approve.
  • Use the account where your pay is deposited, so lenders can see steady income.
  • Fix errors on your credit reports for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Pay down a card balance if you can, which lowers your utilization.
  • Avoid sending many applications to direct lenders in a short time.

Options worth checking first

  • Credit union payday alternative loans. Up to $2,000 at no more than 28% APR, for members (details).
  • Secured or co-signed loans. Collateral or a co-signer can lower the APR a lot.
  • Payment plans. Hospitals, utilities and repair shops often offer them at little or no cost.

Fast loans for bad credit

If you need money within a day and your credit is poor, the fastest options are often the most expensive. Compare speed and cost on emergency loans, and read tribal loans if you are considering Deer Creek Lending or similar lenders.

Bad credit loans by amount

Smaller amounts are easier to get with lower scores. See what each amount costs:

What counts as bad credit

FICO rangeLabelWhat to expect
800–850ExceptionalLowest rates
740–799Very goodLow rates, wide choice
670–739GoodMainstream offers
580–669FairHigher APRs, fewer lenders
300–579PoorMostly high-cost lenders; secured or co-signed loans help

Secured and co-signed options

A loan secured by savings, a car title from a regulated lender, or a co-signer with good credit can cut the APR sharply. Each puts something at risk: the savings or car, or the co-signer's credit. Use them only if the payment is comfortably affordable.

Rebuilding credit while you borrow

  • Choose a lender that reports on-time payments to the major bureaus.
  • Keep card balances low relative to their limits.
  • Pay every bill on time; payment history is the biggest factor in most scores.
  • Check your reports for errors and dispute them.

What $1,500 costs at different APRs

OptionAPRMonthlyTotal interest
Fair credit personal loan30%$146$255
Upper limit of mainstream36%$151$308
High-cost installment199%$296$2,048
Tribal loan (reported)520%$659$6,405
$1,500 over 12 months. Equal monthly payments, no fees. Illustrations, not offers.

Bad credit loan red flags

  • "Guaranteed approval" regardless of income.
  • An upfront fee before you receive the loan.
  • No APR shown until after you sign.
  • Pressure to decide immediately.
  • A lender that will not say which state's law, or which tribe's, governs the loan.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What is the APR and the total of payments for this exact loan?
  2. When and how often will payments be taken?
  3. Can I pay early without a penalty, and do extra payments reduce principal?
  4. Do you report payments to the credit bureaus?
  5. What happens if I miss a payment?

Which lenders are most likely to say yes

In rough order of approval odds for scores under 600: high-cost tribal and short-term lenders, then credit unions (especially where you already bank), then online lenders that weigh income, then mainstream personal loan lenders. Cost runs in the opposite direction. Starting at the cheapest end and working toward the easiest costs a few minutes and can save hundreds of dollars.

Questions

Is there a no credit check loan?

Most legitimate lenders check something, often a soft inquiry or alternative credit data. Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed approval with no checks at all.

Will a request hurt my score further?

Submitting a request does not affect your FICO score. A hard inquiry may happen only when you choose an offer and finish that lender's application.

What is the lowest score accepted?

There is no single minimum. Some lenders consider scores under 580 if income is steady.

Can I get a loan with a 500 credit score?

Possibly, from lenders that weigh income and bank history, but expect high APRs. A secured or co-signed loan can cost much less.
