What an installment loan is

An installment loan gives you a fixed amount up front, which you repay in equal scheduled payments. Each payment covers some interest and some principal, so the balance falls every time you pay, and the loan has a set end date. That makes it easier to plan around than a payday loan, which is due in one lump sum, or a credit card, which has no end date.

Deer Creek Lending's loans are also structured as installment loans. The difference is price: an installment loan at 25% APR and one at 600% APR look similar on paper but cost very different amounts.

When an installment loan makes sense

  • A one-time cost you cannot spread out any other way, such as a car repair or a deposit.
  • Consolidating a few high-rate balances into one fixed payment at a lower APR.
  • When the payment fits comfortably in your tightest month.

It is a poor fit for ongoing gaps in your monthly budget. A loan will not fix a shortfall that comes back next month.

How to compare two offers

  1. Check the APR first, since it includes required fees.
  2. Look at the total of payments in dollars.
  3. Confirm the payment schedule matches your paydays.
  4. Check for prepayment penalties, late fees and returned-payment fees.
  5. Read how the lender reports to credit bureaus. On-time payments may help your credit.

Installment loans by amount

Payments and cheaper sources change with the amount. Pick the guide closest to your request:

Tribal installment loans

Some of the most advertised online installment loans come from tribal lenders such as Deer Creek Lending. They approve fair and poor credit and fund fast, but APRs of several hundred percent are common. See tribal loans before you sign one.

Paying an installment loan off early

Most installment lenders let you pay early without a penalty. Because interest builds on the remaining balance, paying even a little extra each month shortens the loan and cuts total interest. Ask your lender how to make extra payments toward principal.

How to read the loan disclosure box

Federal Truth in Lending rules require lenders to show four numbers before you sign, usually in a box at the top of the agreement:

  • APR: the yearly cost including required fees.
  • Finance charge: the total cost of credit in dollars.
  • Amount financed: what you actually receive or what is paid on your behalf.
  • Total of payments: everything you will have paid if you make every payment on schedule.

If the finance charge is larger than the amount financed, the loan costs more than you are borrowing.

Can an installment loan help your credit?

It can, if the lender reports to the major credit bureaus and you pay on time. Ask before you sign whether and where payments are reported. Late payments reported after about 30 days can lower your score, so set up reminders or autopay from the account your pay goes into.

How to choose a term

A longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest. On $3,000 at 25% APR, 12 months costs about $285 a month and $422 in interest; 36 months costs about $119 a month and $1,294. Pick the shortest term that fits your budget in a bad month, not a good one.

Questions

Do installment loans build credit?

Many lenders report payments to at least one credit bureau, so on-time payments can help. Ask the lender before you sign.

Can I get an installment loan with bad credit?

Some lenders accept lower scores and weigh income instead. Expect a higher APR. See bad credit loans.

Is an installment loan better than a payday loan?

Usually. Payments are spread out and the balance falls each time you pay. Still compare the APR, because some installment loans are very expensive.

What is the minimum for an online installment loan?

Requests through our service start at $200. Individual lenders set their own minimums.
